1. Purpose
This policy outlines the business continuity and disaster recovery (BC/DR) framework for Better Choices Education LLC (“Company”). Its purpose is to ensure the resilience of mission-critical services and the swift recovery of operations in the event of natural disasters, cyberattacks, technical failures, or other disruptions.
2. Scope
This policy applies to:
- All production systems supporting the Company’s web platform and services
- Customer (school district) data and educational assignment infrastructure
- Personnel responsible for IT, security, and business operations continuity
3. Business Continuity Objectives
The Company aims to:
- Ensure uninterrupted availability of essential services to school districts and students
- Minimize downtime and data loss
- Communicate effectively during and after incidents
- Restore operations within defined Recovery Time Objectives (RTOs)
4. Disaster Recovery Strategy
Our recovery strategy includes:
- Daily Encrypted Backups: All production databases and files are backed up daily and stored securely off-site (e.g., AWS S3 with versioning and redundancy)
- Cloud-Based Infrastructure: Hosted in multiple AWS regions to provide high availability and failover
- Infrastructure as Code: Enables fast redeployment of servers and services using predefined templates

6. Roles and Responsibilities
- BC/DR Coordinator: Oversees plan execution and testing
- IT & Engineering Team: Executes failover, restores backups, and rebuilds infrastructure
- Communications Lead: Coordinates internal and external stakeholder communication
7. Communication Plan
In the event of service disruption, the Company will:
- Notify affected school districts via email within 2 hours of confirmed incident
- Provide status updates every 4 hours until resolution
- Post summary and mitigation report within 5 business days
8. Testing and Maintenance
- The BC/DR plan is tested at least annually through tabletop or live simulations
- Post-test reviews are conducted to update procedures and identify gaps
- Plan revisions are communicated to key personnel and stakeholders
9. Policy Review
This policy is reviewed annually or after any major event or infrastructure change.
